Inbound Marketing Fail – Improper Links

Inbound Marketing Fail - Broken LinksAs every inbound marketer knows, the goal for the content we create is measurable action taken by our target audience.  Now more than ever, marketers spend a large percentage of their time creating that content (hopefully quality content) and then promoting the content across various channels and streams.  So, why aren’t we taking the time and care of ensuring that the actionable links we include actually work?  Seriously, I read 200+ articles on average per week seeking out the best and most intriguing content that our industry is pumping out there; and, nothing, I mean NOTHING kills my interest and trust in the article faster than a link that does not work or takes me to the wrong location.

Sure there may be legitimate reasons for these link fails (I could take the time to list out a ton of reasons why links are often not properly working but that is not the purpose of this post); however, I am a true believer that if every author spent just 5 extra minutes testing out every link on his or her article’s published version, then 99% of the improper links would be found and fixed.  But, it is clear that the action of proofreading and testing is often overlooked.  Whether or not the improper link annoys someone as a reader could be written off as subjective and unimportant, but what inbound marketers know is that this severely affects the success of your marketing campaign.  If you are pointing someone to a opt-in that fails, the bottom line fact is that you don’t receive that opt-in, you miss out on that potential lead, and the time you’ve spent building that content and the ROI on that campaign drops significantly.

The reason I am so passionate about this broken link topic is that the articles I read are published by people in our industry (inbound marketing) – the same people that are teaching other businesses on how to correctly create and publish content.  So, if we can’t get this right, then what sort of results can we expect from our clients?  And, what’s even more alarming to me is that this link fail event happens multiple times per week across many different types of company blogs (even the big guys).  Don’t believe me?

Well this week, I’m keeping count.  I am going to list out every article I read, and also post a status of the links within the article basically pointing out each one that contains a link fail.  So, check back in to see how things are going, and feel free to share your thoughts with me.  And, if you happen to be someone that has posted one of these articles, and you’ve updated your broken link, then let me know that too, and I’ll be sure to make mention of your update!

The Simple Sales Contest That Made Forecasting A Priority For Our Sales Reps by HubSpot - broken-ish link (I’ll count it as half a point) – their CTA at the bottom for “Invite Colleagues Today” when you click on it you are taken to a blank page (NOTE: this appears to be an issue with whether or not your particular computer will auto-open your default email system, as it did open on one of my computers but not on 2 others).  Regardless, HubSpot should provide some sort of message and alternative for scenarios and systems that the auto-open feature is not enabled on.
